Figure 21 — Sectional Chart Excerpt · FAA-CT-8080-2H, p. 2-20
Figure 21 shows an area bordered by a hatched magenta line and labeled "DEVILS LAKE WEST MOA." What does the "MOA" designation mean for a pilot flying near it?
Why: The FAA study guide describes MOAs as airspace "established for the purpose of separating certain military training activities from IFR traffic," through which nonparticipating IFR traffic may be cleared if ATC can provide separation — consistent with "Devils Lake West MOA" on Figure 21.
Confuses an MOA with a prohibited area; prohibited areas bar all flight and are charted with a "P" and a number, not a named MOA boundary.
Confuses an MOA with a restricted area; restricted areas are numbered (e.g., "R-4401") and require controlling-agency permission, while MOAs are named and don't carry that permission requirement.
