Figure 24 — Sectional Chart Excerpt · FAA-CT-8080-2H, p. 2-23

Figure 24 shows MAJORS (GVT) with "CT – 118.65 ★" next to a note reading "See NOTAMs/Directory for Class D eff hrs." What does the star next to the tower frequency indicate?

Why: FAA-CT-8080-2H Legend 1 defines the star symbol: "Star indicates operation part-time (see tower frequencies tabulation for hours of operation)." A part-time tower means the Class D surface area is only in effect while the tower is operating, which is exactly why the chart also tells the pilot to check NOTAMs or the Chart Supplement.

  • Invents an emergency-only meaning for the star that Legend 1 does not support — the star denotes part-time operation, not a restricted use for the frequency.
  • Confuses the star with runway-marking symbols; runway identification isn't shown with a star next to the tower frequency.
